Current Events Assignments
Short writing assignments will be used throughout this school year as an assessment of student knowledge about current events and happenings in the United States and the world. Reading the news and becoming aware of world events are important components of becoming a productive and informed citizen, which is one of the goals for my students this year. Along with quizzes, current events writing assignments will account for 30% of each student's grade each quarter, so it is crucial to complete ALL of these assignments by the assigned due date. Due dates for current events assignments will be announced at the beginning of each quarter to ensure that students will have plenty of notice to complete the assignments.
Requirements and Components
Current Events Assignments will be worth 20 points each. Students must read an article about a world/US news, health, or science topic and complete a short writing assignment to receive full credit. Assignments based on sports/entertainment news or events will not be accepted. If students have a question about the appropriateness of their chosen articles, they can always ask me to review the article before completing the assignment. Current events must be completed on Google Classroom BEFORE I meet with your class on the day it is assigned. Each assignment must contain 6 components:
1. Title of Article (2 points)
2. Publication/Source (CNN, Fox News, New York Times, etc.) (2 points)
3. Date Article was Published (Ideally, articles will have been published within the last month.) (2 points)
4. Summary of Article- To earn full points, this section must be at least five sentences! (6 points)
5. Opinion of Article- To earn full points, this section must be at least five sentences! (6 points)
6. Question you have about article or topic (2 points)
